A resident of Choiseul is celebrating her 110th birthday.
Octavie Augustin, aka Miss Aggie, who was born on August 14, 1912, celebrated her birthday with family, friends, and well-wishers at her home at Ponyon, Choiseul.
According to her adopted daughter and niece, Illtyde Alcee, the family is happy to celebrate such a milestone with their loved one.
“Octavie Augustin is celebrating her 110th birthday today. Actually, it’s a big thing for us, because, for her, she never thought she would have made it, but she has proved herself wrong,” Alcee told Loop News.
She said Augustin loves her salted meat, sweet potatoes, peas, and milk.
“I believe it’s God's grace, it’s not even a healthy diet,” Alcee said of Miss Aggie's longevity, adding that we know what happens when we consume a lot of salted meat.
As it relates to her health, Alcee said after Miss Aggie celebrated her 100th birthday, she had an incident in which she bandaged her foot so tight that it affected her blood circulation which resulted in her leg being amputated.
“She is very sickly most times at night. Unfortunately, her eyesight is not very good, her hearing also, but she hears a little bit. It’s a lot to take care of her, but I am trying my best for her,” Alcee said.
According to her, Augustin, who had no children of her own, took in a lot of the family’s children and did a lot for the community, especially the underprivileged.
“She did not have much because she married at a very tender age and she lost her husband at an early stage after her marriage,” Alcee said.
She said Augustin was a farmer throughout her life and worked hard, doing everything that a man would do as it relates to farming.
Helen Charles of the National Council for Older People said she is delighted to be among the centenarian, her family, and friends to celebrate the occasion.
“It’s not often you find somebody reaching 110. I wish that the family takes good care of her so at least she can see another 10 years to come,” Charles said.
Andrea Alcide, a family case worker for older persons said: “We know sometimes with time, people tend to forget about the older people. We really want them to make a special effort to honor her, to say thank you, and let the country, the world know, we have this oldest person who has given so much to our society.”
She said Augustine is the oldest known person on the island.
Alcide said her department will continue to work with older persons and represent them, to ensure that they are comfortable and be treated right.
